Horror as man is dragged under bus in Sydney CBD

A MAN was struck and killed by a bus in Sydney overnight after stepping out of a Uber car which was stopped at a congested intersection.
It appears he was in a ride-share car that was stopped in Bathurst St, near George St, at 3.15am when he got out at a set of traffic lights and was hit by the bus travelling in a marked bus lane on his left.
The 30-year-old suffered appalling head injuries when he was dragged under the bus and apparently died instantly.
Traumatised witnesses had to be treated by paramedics.
Two friends of the victim were believed to have been in the car when the accident happened.
The devastated bus driver sat propped up against a wall nearby while he was treated for shock.
He was heard telling paramedics he just wanted “to go home”.
He was taken to hospital for mandatory testing, but was not physically injured.
A group of security guards who saw the early-morning accident stood huddled together, giving statements and being checked by paramedics.
One of the deeply affected guards doubled over and dry-retched into a garbage bin while a paramedic comforted him.
She had to hold the burly guard up at one point as his legs buckled.
A distressed male witness sat hunched on the wall of Hyde Park helping police, while another man sat glassy-eyed in the stairwell of a parked bus across the road.
Partygoers, heading home from city nightspots, stopped, horrified at the sight of the victim’s body, covered in a bloodied sheet, laying in the road.
“We didn’t see what happened. We saw what was left afterwards,” one of them said.
“It’s so sad. Such a terrible way to die,” another onlooker said.
Sydney City Police Inspector Kerrie Brill said officers had not yet been able to contact the man’s family, who were believed to be overseas.
Inspector Brill said police were still working to determine what exactly happened or whether alcohol was a factor.
“It is still part of the investigation to determine whether it was a red light or green light at this stage,” she said.
“Matters like this do have a large impact on everyone involved, ranging from the drivers to witnesses, and police and emergency services.”

Bill Cosby case: Judge declares mistrial after jury deadlock

A US judge has declared a mistrial in the Bill Cosby sex assault case after the jury remained deadlocked for days.
The seven men and five women were unable to reach a unanimous decision after some 53 hours of deliberations in Norristown, Pennsylvania.
Mr Cosby, 79, is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004. His lawyers had argued the sex was consensual.
The US comedian could now face new proceedings.
For now, he walks away from court a free man, but the prosecution has already said they are pursuing a fresh trial.
Dozens of women say he assaulted them, but statutes of limitation rules mean he was allowed to be tried for Ms Constand's allegation only.
The veteran entertainer could have faced up to a decade in prison if found guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault.
Announcing the decision, the Pennsylvania judge reminded Mr Cosby that he remains charged and on bail, despite the mistrial.
The BBC's Aleem Maqbool, inside the courthouse, said Mr Cosby was expressionless when the decision was announced.
The jury had been instructed by the judge to work into the weekend to reach a verdict, after they first revealed that they were deadlocked on the case on Thursday.

Mob justice is a result of perceived judiciary failure - Justice Akuffo

The nominee for the position of Chief Justice, Ms Sophia Akuffo has stated that one of the causes for mob justice in the country could be attributed to a misunderstanding, perception, and failure of certain processes in the criminal justice system of the country.
She said when such failures occur people often resort to self-help to seek justice which she described as a misnomer adding that "...it has nothing to do with the work that we do."
"And wherever you see self-help it means that certain things have failed and if it’s within a civil realm, it has to do with some delay in case management and so on and so forth."
Justice Akuffo clarified that perceived failure on the part of the judiciary "could be a misunderstanding of why a person was freed or there was a perception of what’s the point of reporting to the police or going to court about this matter, or what’s the point about waiting for the judicial outcome because it will take too long and you won’t even understand what’s going on."
Answering a question from the Appointments Committee Thursday on how she would position the judiciary to minimise the incidence of mob justice in the country, Justice Akuffo stated that effectiveness of the judicial system is an important component that could speed up the quality justice delivery.
"It’s been able to strike that balance and that is one of the areas of concern for the judicial system and the judiciary because so long as there is mob justice , it means something is not going right and we in the judiciary will do our optimum best to ensure that we are not the cause of mob justice."
Apart from several cases of mob justice in the country with the latest casualty being the lynching of Major Maxwell Adams Mahama, a Ghanaian military officer - many have singled out the judiciary for blame.
Justice Akuffo explained that when people cite the judiciary with the truism "Justice delayed is justice denied", they fail to see the flipside "Justice hurried is justice buried" which also holds true with regards to resolving judiciary cases.
She added that the definition of mob justice has to be expanded to include other acts of violence including the activities of land guards.

London fire: Protesters storm town hall

Protesters demanding help for those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire have stormed Kensington and Chelsea Town Hall with a list of demands.
Between 50 and 60 people broke off from a protest outside to go into the council building.
One member of the public said people made homeless needed help "right now".
After meeting survivors near Grenfell Tower, Theresa May announced a £5m fund to pay for emergency supplies, food, clothes and other costs.
There were angry scenes outside the Clement James Centre, in North Kensington, where the meeting had been held.
The Press Association reported one woman was crying at the scene saying it was because the prime minister had declined to speak to anyone outside.
Earlier, the Queen and Prince William visited a relief centre for the victims, while the missing could number about 70, the BBC understands.
Police say at least 30 people died as a result of the west London blaze and are likely to be among the 70. Three of those who died have been identified.
There was nothing to suggest the fire was started deliberately, police said.
The town hall protest began at around 15:00 BST and scores have since joined it.

At around 16:30 BST, people began to rush up the steps and make their way into the building.
One member of the public said people made homeless by the fire needed help "right now", adding: "Nobody knows what is happening. People are so angry. Those people shouldn't be sleeping in the street".
The organisers of the protest said council leaders would not come out to talk to them, but had released a statement, promising to rehouse as many people locally as they could and to provide funding for those affected.
However, they refused to give out the number of people who lived in the tower block - which was one of the protesters' demands, organisers said.

Public 'not satisfied' with answers
Mustafa Al Mansur, who organised the protest, said the council's response was "flimsy" with "no concrete answers".
"The people were not satisfied with the answers," he told BBC News. "The people were getting frustrated and they walked towards the building. They did not force themselves inside. They got inside the main building and were in the foyer, just speaking."
Police then arrived on the scene and formed a barricade, which Mr Al Mansur said led to "physical confrontation" between the two sides.
"We would like the chief executive of the council to make public commitments on what the council is going to do for the victims of this borough, and for all the other buildings in the borough that [could] stand the same fate at Grenfell Towers."

Mechanic killed in horror accident outside Chester Zoo after getting trapped under double decker bus ‘he was working on’

Zoo staff and paramedics fought desperately to save Wayne Lannon but the dad-of-three was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wayne Lannon, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene after desperate attempts to save him in the car park of the popular attraction yesterday lunchtime.
It is believed the dad-of-three, from Wigan, Greater Manchester, was a mechanic and had been working underneath the vehicle when he became trapped shortly after midday.
Zoo staff were among those who tried to free Mr Lannon but he was pronounced dead by paramedics a short time later.
Police have launched an investigation into his death and the Health and Safety Executive has been informed.
Heartbroken friends paid tribute to the ‘one in a million’ father and husband in the hours after the tragedy.
Ryan Liptrot posted on Facebook: “Rest in Peace, Wayne Lannon. A status I never thought I would be writing, a great gent a guy that was class with everyone and it was a pleasure to call you my friend.”
Sharon Jones added: “RIP Wayne. You were one in a million and we will never forget you.”
A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “Officers attended the scene and found that a man had become trapped under a double-decker bus on the coach car park outside the zoo. The bus is believed to have been stationary and unoccupied at the time the incident occurred.

World's first two-headed porpoise discovered by Dutch fishermen

A group of fishermen accidentally discovered the world's first two-headed porpoise, but tossed it back into the sea for fear of getting into trouble.
The bizarre animal was picked up by a Dutch trawler near Hoek van Holland, and is the first known case of conjoined twin porpoises.
Fearing it would be illegal to keep the specimen, the fishermen took a few quick photographs of the dead creature and threw it back into the ocean.
Experts at the University of Rotterdam are now poring over those photographs in the hopes of learning more about parapagus dicephalus - partial twinning - in marine life.
They have already confirmed that the porpoises died shortly after birth because the tail had not stiffened, which allows newborn porpoises to swim.
Both heads also had small hairs on the upper lip, which should fall out shortly after the animals are born.
The harbour porpoise is one of the most common cetaceans - a group of marine life which includes whales and dolphins - found in north west European waters.
“The anatomy of cetaceans is strikingly different from terrestrial mammals with adaptations for living in the sea as a mammal. Much is unknown,” Erwin Kompanje, of the Erasmus MC University Medical Center in Rotterdam, told the New Scientist.
“Adding any extra case to the known nine specimens brings more knowledge on this aspect.”
He said it was regrettable that the fisherman decided to throw the creature back into the ocean, as it is unlikely it will ever be seen again.
The two-headed porpoise is the 10th example of a conjoined twin to be found within the cetaceans group.
“Normal twins are extremely rare in cetaceans,” added Mr Kompanje.
"There is simply not enough room in the body of the female to give room to more than one fetus.”

1 dead, 5 injured in multi-vehicle traffic accident near Eagle Creek

A man was killed late Wednesday in a multi-vehicle traffic accident near Eagle Creek Reservoir.
It happened shortly before 11 p.m. in the 6600 block of W. 56th St., where the driver of a black Mazda was traveling westbound on 56th St. and lost control of his vehicle, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police investigators.
The Mazda was struck on the driver’s side door by an eastbound taxicab. The Mazda driver–who was not wearing a seat belt–was killed instantly, according to police.

A second, unrelated accident happened nearby at the same time at W. 56th St. and Reed Rd. It involved two vehicles–one which apparently fled the scene.

French soldier jailed for molesting girls in Burkina Faso

A French soldier has been jailed for a year by a court in Paris for molesting girls aged three and five in a hotel swimming pool in Burkina Faso.
Sebastien L, 40, and another soldier filmed the abuse and then befriended one of the girls' mothers, a French woman who invited them to her house.
They left the camera behind and the woman alerted the French embassy after viewing the images.
The two soldiers were immediately suspended and sent back to France.
However only Sebastien L was charged, FranceInfo reported.
He admitted to sexual contact with the girls during the incident in Ouagadougou and was sentenced to a year in prison followed by a one-year suspended sentence.
He said he had no explanation for his behaviour, which he blamed on alcohol and the stress of the mission.
The court also banned him from any profession involving minors for five years and ordered him to pay several thousand euros in damages to the girls and their families.
Sebastien L was in Burkina Faso as part of a French force fighting Islamists in the Sahel region.

I fell in love and married a man with dwarfism

Chloe Lusted and husband James are like any other newly married busy couple - they enjoy hanging out together and have recently bought a puppy. But when they first got together, Chloe, 23, faced opposition from her family because James, 29, suffered from a rare genetic condition which causes dwarfism. Here Chloe recounts how their relationship unfolded.
As the phone rang I was nervous. I was about to tell my mum about my new boyfriend and I knew she would be shocked, so I had left it until I was on my journey back to university, almost 200 miles (320km) away.
I told her the name of my new boyfriend and her reaction was pretty instant. She said: "Why Jay, why Jay? Chloe, he is a dwarf, you're not suited."
She couldn't understand what I saw in James, who everyone knows as Jay. She was in shock.
Jay was born with diastrophic dysplasia - a rare genetic condition that causes dwarfism - despite both his parents Dawn and Dave being of average height.
Jay stands at 3ft 7in (1.1m) tall while I am 5ft 7in (1.7m), and that was part of the reason I was so nervous about telling my mum.
I was a bit angry at her at the time, why couldn't she just accept it? But looking back at it now she would have had reservations about any guy I got with.
And because Jay was "different", I guess I can understand why she was so shocked and reacted like she did.
Growing up, I was very much into boys from the age of 16, but I was always looking for a long-term partner.
I have grown up in the church since I was five years old, so it has always been really important to me and I have always wanted to have a wedding and a marriage - I guess I am traditional in that way.

Before Jay I had two long-term relationships and always wanted to settle down with someone, I didn't want to date just any guy. I was always asking myself - is this guy marriage material? And, if not, what am I doing with him?
To be honest, when we first met, I didn't really think about Jay as a potential boyfriend. Because of who he is, and his condition I never really thought about him in that way.
He was friends with friends of mine, and we were acquaintances, but we became friends on the day he carried the Olympic torch when it travelled through Wales in May 2012.
He had been chosen to carry the flame because of his work encouraging others to become involved in disability sport.

The police have identified Yaw Amankwa, alias Bulla, as the key suspect said to have fired at Major Maxwell Adam Mahama at Denkyira Obuasi on Monday May 29, 2017 before other attackers descended and killed him with cement blocks and clubs.
Amankwa, who is on the run, is said to have used a double-barrelled gun he was wielding, while others rushed to buy petrol and set the body of the deceased ablaze.
He is said to have done that with the support of 11 other key suspects, all of whom played various roles in the gruesome murder of Major Mahama at Denkyira-Obuasi.
All the 12 key suspects are however on the run and the police have mounted a search for them.
They are Akwesi Asante; Nana Kwadjo, alias Nana Edjo; John Boakye, Unit Committee Member, and a trader whose name was given only as Sarah, married to Kwaku Brefo, a motorbike rider in the town.
The others are Kwaku Diesel, Kaya Rasta and the rest whose names were given only as Daddy, Boadu, Ahinkra, Tikwa and Attipar.
In one of the evidence videos that circulated on social media, one of the attackers was heard telling another person that, the suspected “armed robber” [Major Mahama] had fortified himself and that even though they had shot at him severally, he was still running.
Police preliminary investigations also revealed that the late Major Mahama, jumped unto a moving vehicle in an attempt to flee from the attackers on two occasions, but they shot through all two vehicles forcing him to jump off.
The Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Bright Oduro has told the media that apart from the fractures on the head of Major Maxwell Adam Mahama, there were bullet wounds on his body, giving a clear indication that the suspects fired shots at the deceased before setting his body ablaze.
During the postmortem, a number of bullets were removed from his body.

Tidal waves hit coastal communities—One feared dead, several properties destroyed

A number of fishing communities on Ghana’s coastline were last Saturday and Sunday hit by waves that destroyed homes and other properties.

Also affected were canoes, nets and fish processing equipment.

Among the worst hit are Shama in the Western Region, Cape Coast and Keta in the Central and Volta regions respectively.

Dotsey Koblah Aklorbortu reports from Shama that the most affected communities in the Western Region are Aboadze, Abuesi, Anlo Village and Shama, where some houses have been submerged while canoes and fishing nets have been destroyed.

Processed fish and other equipment were also damaged by the waves.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic after a tour of the community, the Shama District Chief Executive, Mr Joseph Amoah, said officials of the district office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) were assessing the extent of damage.

He said 191 homes were affected by the waves while 12 homes were completely submerged.

Cape Coast

Some fishing communities in the Central Region are also counting their losses after powerful waves from the Atlantic Ocean swept through the coastline last Saturday night, reports Shirley Asiedu-Addo.

One person is feared dead while property, including 32 boats, has been destroyed.

The affected fishing communities include Saltpond, Anomabo, Kormantse, Abandze and Cape Coast.

Eyewitnesses account

Kofi Mensah, 52, a fisherman in Cape Coast, is suspected to have drowned while trying to salvage his fishing gear.
His body is yet to be retrieved.

Kwasi Baafi, a brother of the lost fisherman, however believes his brother is dead.

"He fell into the sea as we tried to send some of the boats to Elmina and we have since not found him. It's likely he's dead," he stated.

Volta Region

In the Ketu South District and Keta Municipality, 272 houses were submerged, while about 1,630 people were displaced in last Saturday’s waves in the area, reports Tim Dzamboe.

Malawi learners on street tear-gassed by police: Protesting against govt on nationwide teachers’ strike

Malawi Police have fired tear gas at  hundreds of learners from some public primary schools in Blantyre on Monday took to the streets, asking authorities to address their teachers’ grievances so that they can resume learning. The learners blocked the M1 at near Mbayani market causing traffic jam along the road. Some even went further by pelting stones at road users, mostly vehicles.
They were expressing their anger of teachers’ strike which started last week.
Clad in various school uniforms, the learners from HHI, Blantyre Girls, Ndirande-Kachere, Nyambadwe and Namiwawa primary schools put business to a standstill as they chanted in unison: “Tikhonza bwanji! Sitikuphunzira!! [How are we going to pass examinations when we are not learning! ].
The learners, aged between eight and 14, sang songs demeaning the Democratic Progressive Party  administration while demanding that they immediately go back to school where teachers had abandoned chalk unless government pays everyone their leave grants.
Police fired teargas at the learners, saying  the protests were unlawful because no prior permission had been granted.
There were no reports of serious injuries.
Opposition members in Parliament (MPs) took government to task over the issue, saying delaying the process of payment will affect most learners, some of whom are set to write their Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations starting this month end.

Making his comment on the proposed 2017/18 National Budget on Friday, MP for Dowa East Richard Chimwendo-Banda (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) asked government to explain what had been done to resolve the strike.

He described the situation as pathetic and cautioned government that it is sitting on a time bomb as people are tired with what is happening.
