Five killed, 20 injured in Mombasa-Nairobi Highway accident

Five people were killed and 20 injured on Wednesday when a truck crashed into a bus near Salama area along Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.
The truck was overtaking when it hit the Chania bus, St John Ambulance Communications manager Fred Majiwa told the Star on phone.

Majiwa said the bus veered off the road and overturned killing the five in the 1am accident. He said those injured were taken to Sultan Hamud hospital.
More accidents have been recorded since the New Year when the NTSA reported that 32 more people had died , bringing the number since Christmas to 58.

Director general Francis Meja said the higher number of accidents resulted from the rush as school and work resumed.
In the same period in 2015, 48 people died in accidents while 40 suffered serious injuries and 39 minor injuries.

The National Transport and Safety Authority said the number of road crashes had increased by 4.6 per cent in a year. The figure stood at 2,949 on December 21 compared to 2,819 in 2014.

Most accidents resulted from drunk-driving and speeding.
It is estimated that crashes cause a loss of 5.6 per cent of the national GDP. The high population, increase in the number of vehicles and the improved road networks increases the risks.
