In keeping with her promise to help to eradicate child marriages, winner of TV3’s Ghana’s Most Beautiful Season 8, Bentie Abigail Baciara aka Baci has been leading an empowerment programme across the country to educate girls on their right to say no to early marriages.
Baci, an ambassador of End Child Marriage for both Action Aid Ghana and Unicef, spent time last week with school girls in Jirapa in the Upper West region teaching them to build their self-confidence.
Baci interacted with over 50 girls from selected primary and junior high schools from Jirapa who were trained and equipped with the knowledge to become child ambassadors who will then pass on this knowledge to their peers.
Speaking with Showbiz, Baci said that mentorship is an important element in building the confidence of girls to the point where they are able to resist attempts to force them into early marriages.
“Girls must build their confidence and pick mentors who will motivate them to remain in schools to become successful women instead of agreeing to arranged marriages at such early ages,” she said.
While on her campaign, Baci also met with some religious and opinion leaders and asked them to protect young girls from those who might want to force them into early marriages.
She also asked them to encourage the girls to stay in school.
Baci is set to embark on the next stage of her nationwide campaign with a visit to the Brong Ahafo Region from August 17 to 20.
